Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) is a corporate-level Maintenance Strategy implemented to optimize the maintenance program of a company or facility. The final result of an RCM program is the implementation of specific maintenance strategies for each asset in the facility, optimized to maintain plant productivity through cost-effective maintenance techniques.

Four principles are critical for an RCM program

  • Preserving the system function.
  • Identifying failure modes that can affect the system's function.
  • Prioritizing failure modes.
  • Selecting effective and applicable tasks to control failure modes.

RCM identifies the most critical functions of a company and seeks to optimize the maintenance strategy to minimize system failure, thereby increasing equipment reliability and availability. The most vital assets are those that are likely to fail or have significant consequences if they do fail. The maintenance strategy identifies the likelihood of failure modes and their consequences while considering the functions of the equipment. Cost-effective maintenance techniques that minimize the likelihood of failure are then determined, and the most effective methods are adopted to improve the facility's overall reliability.

The advantages of RCM include increased equipment availability and reduced costs and maintenance. The seven steps for implementing Reliability-Centered Maintenance are:

  • Selecting equipment for RCM analysis.
  • Defining the function and boundaries of systems containing the selected equipment.
  • Defining how the system can fail (failure modes).
  • Identifying the root cause of failure modes.
  • Assessing the effects of failure.
  • Selecting maintenance tactics for each failure mode.
  • Implementing and regularly reviewing the selected maintenance strategies.

A properly implemented Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) can also support the RCM process.

CMMS can also help a maintenance program development goals for cost tracking, monitoring the bottom line, and benchmarking data.

The primary purpose of RCM is to evaluate, prioritize, categorize, and understand the appropriate way to intervene in the impact of failures.
